A Tree Fell on My Roof – What Do I Do Now?
There comes a time where there might be harsh weather, and depending on where you live – trees might become a factor that you do not want to mess with. In Dallas, most homes have trees nearby and after a hard storm or ice buildup in the winter limbs are likely to snap, fall and cause damage to your roof. This is because they are large, and they can do some serious damage if they fall. This includes some of the larger branches of the tree snapping off and winding up on something that you do not want them on.
If you live in a home that is surrounded by trees and you find yourself looking around and wondering what the heck you’re going to do in case of a storm, many people will trim the trees and make sure to take care of them – but a lot like to keep them there. Trees are good for your health, your environment and give us many different benefits that you wouldn’t be able to get if you did not have trees in your yard.
Then comes the time with the harsh weather where the tree is not as promising as you’d hope it would be. The tree was old, huge and gave way because of whatever reason – Mother Nature took over. This is when you question whether or not having them was the right thing to do in the first place.
With this being said, you should know the steps that you should take in order to protect the outside of your home and make sure that you have everything that you need in case the tree did fall on your home, and now you’re just staring at it wondering what in the world you should do next. Don’t panic, we can walk you through it step by step.
The Tree Fell and Now You Know What to Do
The first thing you have to do is make sure that everyone that was in the house during the time is okay. You want to address any physical issues that might have presented themselves in the people, and make sure to get them to the hospital if that is the case. You shouldn’t take the well being of your home over the well being of those that live in the home.
Once you’ve taken care of those that live within the home, you have to then stand back and assess the damage. Do not proceed to go into the home because you do not want to move something that makes the tree sink further in. You want to make sure that you know how much damage has been done, and where exactly the tree fell.
Dallas Roofing Insurance Company Claims
Then comes the time to call the insurance company and notify them of the problem that you’re facing. Usually, they will let you know what exactly they need in order to process your request. They may also have you work with one of their preferred companies, but a lot of times that is completely up to you on who you choose to work with.
This is probably the most important step in making sure that you get the required coverage from your insurance, but you have to document everything. Make sure that you get receipts, and paper work from those involved letting the insurance company know every little detail. You also want to make sure to take pictures of the tree on the home.
Cutting and Removing the Tree
You will need to make sure that you call someone that is able to come and cut down and remove the tree from the home. This could be anyone that has experience doing this. Sometimes, the fire department in the area can do this for you – but once again, it all depends on your area and what your insurance company decides to say about it.
Assess the damage once the tree has been removed. You want to make sure that you know exactly where the damage is, and generally it is on the roof and the walls of the home, depending on how heavy the tree is and how far it has sunk in. You want to know that the person that you hire to remove the tree is not going to remove half the home at the same time. This is stressful, since you’re looking at the damage yourself, but it is also something that needs to be done, so you know the extent of the damage.
Calling a Roofing Contractor
Contact a contractor that is able to come over and give you an estimate of the costs. Generally, if your homeowners insurance will cover the costs of the roof on the home – the contractor will contact them directly or you can give the insurance company a copy of the estimate. You want to ensure that the insurance company has the required documentation. If you’re missing just one paper, they can deny the claim – which means you’re paying out of pocket.
Once the payment and everything is settled with the insurance company, with your contractor and whoever else you have to work with, you can then feel more confident about the process that you have to go through in order to have the roof fixed, the tree removed and having your family go back to the way things were prior to having the tree fall on your home.
If the damage is bad, and the roof is not covering the home completely, then you have to make sure to find somewhere for you and your family to stay for the time being. Having a tree fall on your home is something that is serious. You should always make sure that your family is safe prior to moving onto the rest of the list. You shouldn’t have to worry about the large trees outside of your home – you should be able to live comfortably knowing that you’re covered.
