Spring Roof Inspection – How to Inspect Your Roof for Damage Before the Storm and Hail Season

Hail DamageAs Spring draws near it’s time to open your windows, clean the house, get the yard ready and … check your roof for damage.

You should inspect your roof every spring for missing shingles and other damage caused by the winter storms North Texas had this season. As the temperatures warm up and spring begins we’re also coming up on our rainy season which often times includes hail. If you have minor roof damage before the storms come, you’re likely to end up with costly repairs after a big storm. Check your roof now and get small repairs dealt with now before they become expensive roof maintenance.

Check your roof and interior for signs of damage or leaks

• Check your ceilings for water stains. Water stains mean there’s a leak somewhere. If you have an attic check there as well for water stains on the roof and floor. If you notice a musty smell then you probably have a roof leak as well.

• Check your roof, ideally wit ha pair of binoculars, for any missing shingles or other damage. Check the flashing, the area around your chimney and anyplace you have ventilation pipes sticking out. If you see any bulges or dents in the shingles, flashing or anywhere else on your roof you likely need to get it checked by a professional.

• If you have a ladder and safety gear and a friend to help it’s a good idea to get on your roof to check for damage. Look for missing or peeling shingles, nails that have been pushed out of the roof and anything else that doesn’t look right. Again, if you see any issues you will likely save a lot of money by getting your roof repaired sooner rather than later. Hail damage, wind or rain damage will quickly increase the severity of your roof damage. The bottom line is you will need to get your roof repaired sooner or later.

• While you’re looking at your roof, check your gutters and downspouts for any issues – warping, popped seams, anything that looks unusual. Clean out any leaves sticks or other debris to ensure your gutters are able to divert water away from your house.
